CVE-2026-9256
HIGHEPSS 95th pctlDescription
NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source have a vulnerability in the ngx_http_rewrite_module module. This vulnerability exists when a rewrite directive uses a regex pattern with distinct, overlapping Perl-Compatible Regular Expression (PCRE) captures (for example, ^/((.*))$) and a replacement string that references multiple such captures (for example, $1$2) in a redirect or arguments context. An unauthenticated attacker along with conditions beyond their control can exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted HTTP requests. This may cause a heap buffer overflow in the NGINX worker process leading to a restart. Additionally, attackers can execute code on systems with Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) disabled or when the attacker can bypass ASLR. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.

Common questions
How do I fix CVE-2026-9256?
Published advisories record a fix for 73 affected products. The "How to fix" section on this page lists the fixed version and source advisory for each one, so apply the entry matching what you actually run.
Is CVE-2026-9256 being actively exploited?
Not that we know of. CVE-2026-9256 is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Its EPSS score of 10.1% is the estimated probability that it will be exploited in the next 30 days. That is higher than 95% of all scored CVEs.
How severe is CVE-2026-9256?
CVE-2026-9256 has a CVSS v3 base score of 8.1, rated important. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.
What does CVE-2026-9256 affect?
Published advisories record a fix for nginx (Debian), nginx (Rocky), nginx (Red Hat / RHEL), nginx-all-modules (Red Hat / RHEL), and 69 more. Only products with a sourced advisory are listed, so treat this as what we can cite rather than a complete inventory.
