CVE-2026-55453

LOW
3.3
CVSS v3
NVD

Description

OpenPrinting CUPS is an open source printing system for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems. Prior to 2.4.20, the backend/ipp.c quote_string() function preserves carriage-return and line-feed characters in a remote printer-controlled marker-message before report_attr() writes the value to the scheduler status stream. The scheduler can parse an injected newline as a separate PPD: control line and persist an attacker-selected PPD keyword. The reporter demonstrated that a later print job on a Foomatic-backed queue could consume an injected FoomaticRIPCommandLine value and execute in the filter context as lp. This issue is fixed in version 2.4.20.

Common questions

How do I fix CVE-2026-55453?

Upgrade cups on debian unstable to 2.4.20-1 or later.

Is CVE-2026-55453 being actively exploited?

Not that we know of. CVE-2026-55453 is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Its EPSS score of 0.20% is the estimated probability that it will be exploited in the next 30 days. That is higher than 9% of all scored CVEs.

How severe is CVE-2026-55453?

CVE-2026-55453 has a CVSS v3 base score of 3.3, rated low. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.
