CVE-2026-102946

CRITICAL
9.1
CVSS v3
NVD

Description

joserfc is a Python library that provides an implementation of several JSON Object Signing and Encryption (JOSE) standards. Prior to 1.7.4, joserfc.jws.deserialize_json() accepts a JWS General JSON Serialization with an empty signatures array as authenticated. The verify_general_json() loop performs no iterations for the empty array and returns success because no signature check failed, allowing an attacker without a signing key to supply an arbitrary payload that relying applications may treat as authentic. The issue affects the General JSON Serialization path; compact JWS and JWT decoding, Flattened JSON serialization, and JWE JSON processing do not follow this vulnerable path. This issue is fixed in version 1.7.4.

Common questions

How do I fix CVE-2026-102946?

Upgrade joserfc on debian unstable to 1.7.4-1 or later.

Is CVE-2026-102946 being actively exploited?

Not that we know of. CVE-2026-102946 is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Its EPSS score of 0.12% is the estimated probability that it will be exploited in the next 30 days. That is higher than 2% of all scored CVEs.

How severe is CVE-2026-102946?

CVE-2026-102946 has a CVSS v3 base score of 9.1, rated critical. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.

What does CVE-2026-102946 affect?

Published advisories record a fix for joserfc (Debian). Only products with a sourced advisory are listed, so treat this as what we can cite rather than a complete inventory.
