CVE-2022-23642

HIGHEPSS 99th pctl
8.8
CVSS v3
NVD

Description

Sourcegraph is a code search and navigation engine. Sourcegraph prior to version 3.37 is vulnerable to remote code execution in the `gitserver` service. The service acts as a git exec proxy, and fails to properly restrict calling `git config`. This allows an attacker to set the git `core.sshCommand` option, which sets git to use the specified command instead of ssh when they need to connect to a remote system. Exploitation of this vulnerability depends on how Sourcegraph is deployed. An attacker able to make HTTP requests to internal services like gitserver is able to exploit it. This issue is patched in Sourcegraph version 3.37. As a workaround, ensure that requests to gitserver are properly protected.

Common questions

How do I fix CVE-2022-23642?

Upgrade sourcegraph to 3.37 or later.

Is CVE-2022-23642 being actively exploited?

Not that we know of. CVE-2022-23642 is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Its EPSS score of 74.3% is the estimated probability that it will be exploited in the next 30 days. That is higher than 99% of all scored CVEs.

How severe is CVE-2022-23642?

CVE-2022-23642 has a CVSS v3 base score of 8.8, rated high. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.

What does CVE-2022-23642 affect?

Published advisories record a fix for sourcegraph (NVD). Only products with a sourced advisory are listed, so treat this as what we can cite rather than a complete inventory.
