CVE-2022-0847

HIGHCISA KEVEPSS 100th pctl
7.8
CVSS v3
NVD

Description

A flaw was found in the way the "flags" member of the new pipe buffer structure was lacking proper initialization in copy_page_to_iter_pipe and push_pipe functions in the Linux kernel and could thus contain stale values. An unprivileged local user could use this flaw to write to pages in the page cache backed by read only files and as such escalate their privileges on the system.

Common questions

How do I fix CVE-2022-0847?

Published advisories record a fix for 32 affected products. The "How to fix" section on this page lists the fixed version and source advisory for each one, so apply the entry matching what you actually run.

Is CVE-2022-0847 being actively exploited?

Yes. CVE-2022-0847 is listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, which means exploitation has been observed in the wild. US federal agencies were required to remediate it by 2022-05-16. Treat it as a priority whatever its CVSS score says.

How severe is CVE-2022-0847?

CVE-2022-0847 has a CVSS v3 base score of 7.8, rated high. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.

What does CVE-2022-0847 affect?

Published advisories record a fix for linux (Debian), linux-aws-5.13 (Ubuntu), linux-azure-5.13 (Ubuntu), linux-gcp-5.13 (Ubuntu), and 28 more. Only products with a sourced advisory are listed, so treat this as what we can cite rather than a complete inventory.
