CVE-2021-4104

HIGHEPSS 100th pctl
7.5
CVSS v3
NVD

Description

JMSAppender in Log4j 1.2 is vulnerable to deserialization of untrusted data when the attacker has write access to the Log4j configuration. The attacker can provide TopicBindingName and TopicConnectionFactoryBindingName configurations causing JMSAppender to perform JNDI requests that result in remote code execution in a similar fashion to CVE-2021-44228. Note this issue only affects Log4j 1.2 when specifically configured to use JMSAppender, which is not the default. Apache Log4j 1.2 reached end of life in August 2015. Users should upgrade to Log4j 2 as it addresses numerous other issues from the previous versions.

Common questions

How do I fix CVE-2021-4104?

Published advisories record a fix for 121 affected products. The "How to fix" section on this page lists the fixed version and source advisory for each one, so apply the entry matching what you actually run.

Is CVE-2021-4104 being actively exploited?

Not that we know of. CVE-2021-4104 is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Its EPSS score of 81.1% is the estimated probability that it will be exploited in the next 30 days. That is higher than 100% of all scored CVEs.

How severe is CVE-2021-4104?

CVE-2021-4104 has a CVSS v3 base score of 7.5, rated high. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.

What does CVE-2021-4104 affect?

Published advisories record a fix for apache-log4j1.2 (Debian), eap7-apache-commons-beanutils (Red Hat / RHEL), eap7-apache-commons-beanutils (Rocky), eap7-apache-cxf (Red Hat / RHEL), and 117 more. Only products with a sourced advisory are listed, so treat this as what we can cite rather than a complete inventory.
