CVE-2019-1551

MEDIUMEPSS 96th pctl
5.3
CVSS v3
NVD

Description

There is an overflow bug in the x64_64 Montgomery squaring procedure used in exponentiation with 512-bit moduli. No EC algorithms are affected. Analysis suggests that attacks against 2-prime RSA1024, 3-prime RSA1536, and DSA1024 as a result of this defect would be very difficult to perform and are not believed likely. Attacks against DH512 are considered just feasible. However, for an attack the target would have to re-use the DH512 private key, which is not recommended anyway. Also applications directly using the low level API BN_mod_exp may be affected if they use BN_FLG_CONSTTIME. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.1e (Affected 1.1.1-1.1.1d). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.0.2u (Affected 1.0.2-1.0.2t).

How do I fix CVE-2019-1551?

Published advisories record a fix for 5 affected products. The "How to fix" section on this page lists the fixed version and source advisory for each one, so apply the entry matching what you actually run.

Is CVE-2019-1551 being actively exploited?

Not that we know of. CVE-2019-1551 is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Its EPSS score of 14.3% is the estimated probability that it will be exploited in the next 30 days. That is higher than 96% of all scored CVEs.

How severe is CVE-2019-1551?

CVE-2019-1551 has a CVSS v3 base score of 5.3, rated medium. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.

What does CVE-2019-1551 affect?

Published advisories record a fix for openssl (Debian), libssl1.0.0 (Ubuntu), libssl1.1 (Ubuntu), openssl (Ubuntu), and 1 more. Only products with a sourced advisory are listed, so treat this as what we can cite rather than a complete inventory.
