CVE-2019-14318

MEDIUMEPSS 84th pctl
5.9
CVSS v3
NVD

Description

Crypto++ 8.3.0 and earlier contains a timing side channel in ECDSA signature generation. This allows a local or remote attacker, able to measure the duration of hundreds to thousands of signing operations, to compute the private key used. The issue occurs because scalar multiplication in ecp.cpp (prime field curves, small leakage) and algebra.cpp (binary field curves, large leakage) is not constant time and leaks the bit length of the scalar among other information.

Common questions

How do I fix CVE-2019-14318?

Upgrade libcrypto++ on debian 11 to 5.6.4-9 or later.

Is CVE-2019-14318 being actively exploited?

Not that we know of. CVE-2019-14318 is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Its EPSS score of 2.5% is the estimated probability that it will be exploited in the next 30 days. That is higher than 84% of all scored CVEs.

How severe is CVE-2019-14318?

CVE-2019-14318 has a CVSS v3 base score of 5.9, rated medium. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.

What does CVE-2019-14318 affect?

Published advisories record a fix for libcrypto++ (Debian). Only products with a sourced advisory are listed, so treat this as what we can cite rather than a complete inventory.
